The Pritikin Program is lifestyle approach to reducing risk factors associated with chronic diseases. The Pritikin Program has been taught to 100,000+ people for over 35 years. The Pritikin approach to improved health through lifestyle change has been the subject of over 100 peer-reviewed scientific studies. The Program is comprised of three components: Nutrition, Exercise, and Mind-Body Health. Patients are taught optimal health is achieved through lifestyle change that incorporates the foods we eat, our daily physical activity, and how we handle stress.
In order for a program to be a Medicare-approved provider of Intensive Cardiac Rehab, statutory and regulatory requirements must be met. A program must show, in peer-reviewed published research, that it improves patients’ cardiovascular disease through specific outcomes. The Pritikin Program was approved for ICR through the national coverage determination (NCD) process by accomplishing the following for its patients:
- positively affected the progression of coronary heart disease;
- reduced the need for coronary bypass surgery; and
- reduced the need for percutaneous coronary interventions.
Medicare’s analysis also determined the Pritikin Program’s outcomes research demonstrates that it accomplished a statistically significant reduction in:
- low density lipoprotein;
- body mass index;
- systolic blood pressure;
- diastolic blood pressure; and
- the need for cholesterol, blood pressure, and diabetes medications.
All patients who qualify for traditional Cardiac Rehab also qualify for Intensive Cardiac Rehab.
If your patients have experienced one or more of the following events, and if they have not yet begun Medicare-reimbursed cardiac rehab after their most recent event, they qualify for Pritikin ICR.
- Acute myocardial infarction (within the preceding 12 months only)
- Coronary artery bypass surgery
- Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty or stenting procedure
- Current stable angina pectoris
- Heart or heart-lung transplant
- Heart valve repair or replacement
Physicians prescribe ICR, instead of CR, for their cardiac patients. ICR patients begin with an individual consultation with a cardiac rehab specialist at their local, Pritikin-certified, ICR facility. Then they start exercising under medical supervision and, if it’s medically necessary, they are monitored with telemetry equipment.
At the facility, your patients also view the Pritikin Education Series, which consists of healthy lifestyle education delivered in workshop and video format, as well as hands-on cooking demonstrations. Each of the video lectures feature a subject matter expert from the Pritikin Longevity Center — experts in the fields of nutrition, medicine, exercise, culinary arts, and psychology.
Your patients will also benefit from the personal attention of your personnel at the facility who’ve been trained regarding the Pritikin ICR program. They moderate lecture sessions, answer your patients’ questions, address their concerns and have tools to help keep you informed of each patient’s progress.
The Pritikin Eating Plan focuses on a wide variety of unrefined, minimally processed foods. The Pritikin Eating Plan highlights the value of healthy, nutrient-rich foods such as vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. The health benefits from the Pritikin Eating Plan have been scientifically proven through numerous peer-reviewed published studies. These studies, cited in Medicare’s national coverage determination, showed the Pritikin Eating Plan (along with exercise and stress-reduction) positively affected the progression of coronary artery disease.
We can help you inform your colleagues and stakeholders with an in-person presentation. In it, we’ll provide in-depth details on how the program is implemented, show samples of our Education Series, and field questions from your facility’s medical director, financial representatives, program coordinator, and cardiac rehab staff. In taking the next step, a face-to-face meeting is the simplest and most effective way to decide if providing your patients the opportunity for better outcomes and higher satisfaction through Pritikin ICR is right for you.
