Ordinary

CARDIAC REHABILITATION

Typically approved for up to 36 Sessions

Focuses mainly on exercise, with limited lifestyle education

Pritikin Intensive

CARDIAC REHABILITATION

Approved for 72 Sessions – Same outpatient format as standard cardiac rehabilitation

Patients receive education AND exercise on each day of the program

Who Qualifies for ICR?

Medicare Part B covers ICR program services for beneficiaries who have experienced one or more of the following:

  • An acute myocardial infarction within the preceding 12 months
  • A coronary artery bypass surgery
  • Current stable angina pectoris
  • Heart valve repair or replacement
  • Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) or coronary stenting
  • A heart or heart-lung transplant

The Science

The Pritikin Program meets the rigorous research and scientific outcome requirements necessary for Medicare approval as an ICR program.

More than 100 studies, all published in peer-reviewed scientific journals, have shown documented results in reducing risk factors for heart disease and other conditions.

While some factors affecting health, such as age, gender, and family history, are not controllable, the Pritikin Program is proven to prevent, control, or reverse risk factors for a multiplicity of diseases, ailments, and conditions including:

LDL CHOLESTEROL AND TRIGLYCERIDES REDUCED

Among 4,587 adults, LDL decreased on average 23% in 3 weeks. Triglycerides fell 33%.

CHRONIC INFLAMMATION REDUCED

Markers of chronic inflammation, notably C-reactive protein, fell about 40% in 2 to 3 weeks.

STATIN THERAPY ENHANCED

Before starting the Pritikin Program, 93 people had lowered their cholesterol about 20% using statins. Two weeks after beginning Pritikin, their cholesterol had fallen nearly 20% more.

DIABETES IMPROVED

Among 864 Type 2 diabetics, fasting glucose fell on average 19% within 3 weeks of starting the Pritikin Program. Many reduced their need for diabetes medications.

BLOOD PRESSURE LOWERED

Among 1,117 hypertensives, systolic and diastolic blood pressure each fell on average 9% within 3 weeks of beginning the Pritikin Program. Many reduced or eliminated their need for hypertension medications.

WEIGHT MANAGEMENT

Within 2 to 3 weeks of starting the Pritikin Program, overweight adults lost on average 7 to 11 pounds.

LONG-TERM SUCCESS WITH HEART HEALTH

A follow-up study of 64 heart patients found that 68% of those who had eliminated their angina (chest pain) with the Pritikin Program were still angina-free five years later.
